There is also evidence that rural living, or living in places with trees, seems to elevate happiness and reduce stress. Now that people are working remote, the boss are hounding them even more, because of chat tools and stuff. So when pandemic hits, it's like a vacation, remote working, things get more relaxed. They're all workaholics abusing workaholics.
They can't leave work until their bosses leave. Japan has a very strict corporate culture. The upside to making this one change is enormous, even if companies just started allowing a 'partial' work from home policy. Perhaps eventually companies could downsize their offices, and some people might be able to work remotely from a different state entirely, which could reduce the cost of living in places like the Bay Area or New York. This will reduce wear and tear on cars and roads and reduce carbon emissions. Like you said, it eases traffic all around, which could greatly reduce stress and for people who are working from home, they no longer have a commute and have just freed up X amount of time everyday. I really hope more companies follow Twitter's lead. That could lower traffic in Southern California since that is a major factor in traffic jams - people going to and from work.
